Madonna REALLY doesn't like smokers at her concert
Posted December 21, 2012
Sometimes you have to be firm against smokers, especially in foreign climes. Or so it seems Madonna has concluded.
On tour in Santiago, Chile, she blew up at smokers during a sound check on Wednesday, cursed at them and threatened to cancel her concert if they didn't stub out their butts right now, ABC, Rolling Stone, and a host of other media reported.
TMZ had a video on which the 54-year-old singer could be heard saying, "You don't care about me, I don't care about you. Are we going to play that game? I'm not kidding. I can't sing if you smoke. ¿Entiendes?"
That's Spanish for: Understand? Or: Get it?
Then she cut the sound check short and stormed off stage. But she went on with the show later.
You can't blame her for objecting to smoke; it's tough enough to sing every day for weeks, let alone when you're in your 50s. And the U.S. is more serious about smoking bans in public than many other countries.
Still, it's only the latest kerfuffle for the Controversial Girl during her ongoing MDNA Tour, the top-earning tour of 2012. Last month, she tangled with authorities in Russia by supporting the imprisoned punk singers Pussy Riot and standing up for gay rights. Earlier, in France, she offended some by sticking a swastika on a picture of a right-wing politician. She described President Obama as a "black Muslim" (he's a Christian) in Washington, D.C, and kept fans waiting for more than three hours in Miami before she performed.
But at least we're still talking about her. That's Madonna: She's not going away quietly.
