TV tonight: 'Arrow,' 'Modern Family'
Posted January 22, 2013
Arrow | CW, 8 ET/PT
Say this for Arrow: It has pulled some awfully good actors into its superhero orbit. You start with Susanna Thompson, the luminous Once and Again star who plays Oliver/Arrow's mother. Then add Torchwood's always- welcome John Barrowman, who is in the midst of a continuing guest stint as the mysterious Malcolm. And tonight the show brings in Ben Browder, who has been too-little seen on American television since his starring stints on Farscape and Stargate SG-1, as Oliver's latest target of suspicion. That's a lot of talent you've lined up there, Arrow. Don't waste it.
Modern Family | ABC, 9 ET/PT
Elsewhere on the guest front, Modern Family follows up on last week's hilarious-and-touching-in-turn seasonal high point - the birth of Gloria and Jay's baby - with a visit from Gloria's mother. And playing mom is Elizabeth Pena, recently seen in Off the Map and still adored in certain corners for her stint in one of the all-time great shows that got away: John Sayles' Shannon's Deal.
Rise of the Drones | PBS, 9 ET/PT
While much has been written about drones and their use in modern warfare and surveillance, odds are many of us have only a sketchy understanding of how they work and what they really do. So, as it often and invaluably does, NOVA is stepping in to fill that knowledge gap. As you set your DVR, however, keep in mind that science is NOVA's focus. While other issues are discussed, this is not an investigation into the moral, legal or ethical dilemmas raised by drones; if that's what you're seeking, seek elsewhere.
